Macroscopic FeaturesLong conical or long fusiform, with a few branches, slightly curved, 3~12cm long, 0.6~1.2cm diameter. Externally brownish-red or grayish-brown, with twisted longitudinal wrinkles, apex has scars of stem. Firm texture but easily broken, fractured surface has reddish-brown cortex and brownish-yellow xylem. faint odor; slightly acrid taste.
Quality RequirementsSuperior medicinal material is large, firm, reddish-brown.
PropertiesBitter, cold, toxic.
FunctionsDrains water, expels rheum, resolves toxin, disperses stagnation. Apply to chest and abdominal hydrocele, difficulty in urination and defecation, abscess and sore toxin, scrofula and gall.
