Macroscopic FeaturesRhizome is cylindrical, short and thick, slightly curved, some have branches. Externally brown, rough with wrinkles; main root is cylindrical, thick and short, light in weight, loose outer skin, can flake off in layers. Fractured surface is brown, abnormal vascular bundles present in patterned lines; inner surface is yellow and membranous. Aromatic odor, slightly bitter and astringent taste at first, then sweet.
Quality RequirementsSuperior medicinal material has even size and brown fractured surface.
PropertiesSweet, bitter; neutral.
FunctionsPromotes qi, boosts blood, frees pulse, calms panting. Apply to blood stasis due to deficiency of qi, cardiac pain due to thoracic obstruction, stroke and hemiparalysis, lassitude and breathlessness.
