Production Regions
Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Jiangsu, Shanxi, Hubei.
Macroscopic Features
Cylindrical or conical, 10~20cm long, up to 4cm diameter; externally grayish-brown to dark brown, rough, with lateral roots, apex often enlarged, with numerous round aerial stem scars, gradually tapers downwards, with longitudinal grooves and transverse lenticels and branched root scars. Hard texture, not easily broken, fractured surface is fibrous, off-white to grayish-brown. faint odor; slightly bitter and astringent taste.

Superior medicinal material has even root, fat and fresh, soft texture with no rootlets.

Functions
