Macroscopic FeaturesWhole herb is tangled into a cluster, lower stem nodes sometimes have thin rootlets. Stem is crooked, about 1mm in diameter; externally reddish-brown, with longitudinal lines; fractured surface is solid grayish-white. Opposing leaves, often wrinkled and crushed, intact leaves are wide oval or heart shape, entire, upper surface is dark green to brownish-green, lower surface is light in color; after soaking in water and examining by light, black short lines can be seen; leaf stem is thin and long, sometimes one can see flower or fruit on the axil. faint odor; tasteless.
