Macroscopic FeaturesRhizomes in an irregular cluster, often with bulbous branches, uneven length and size, diameter 1~4cm. Externally brown to grayish-brown, with dense round joints and irregular longitudinal wrinkles, and numerous rootlets or scars of rootlets; apex has remnants of stem. Hard texture, not easily broken, cut surface is pale yellowish-white to yellowish-brown, with radial striations and pith at the center. faint odor, slightly astringent taste.

FunctionsClears heat, resolves toxin, invigorates blood, resolves abscess, dispels wind-damp and sore, snake and insect bites. Apply to pulmonary abscess, cough due to lung heat, throat swelling pain, diarrhea, wind-damp impediment, injuries from falls, swollen abscess and cancer.
