Macroscopic Features
Hua lu rong: Cylindrical branched, with one branch called ‘two pronged’, main branch is called ‘great pillar’, 17~20cm long, sawed surface diameter is 4~5cm, 1cm away from the sawed surface is the lateral branch, called ‘gate’, 9~15cm long, diameter is thinner than the great pillar. Outer skin is reddish-brown or brown, lustrous and moist, externally has dense reddish-yellow or brownish-yellow thin hairs, upper portion is relatively dense, lower is relatively loose; in the space between the forks is one grayish-black vein, hairs tightly adhered skin. Sawed surface is yellowish-white, without bone-like outside layer; the center has dense small holes. Light texture, slightly fishy odor, slightly salty taste. two branched material is called ‘three pronged’, great pillar is 23~33cm long, with smaller diameter than that of two pronged, slightly in bow-shape, slightly flat, apex is slightly pointed, lower has numerous longitudinal ridges and raised knots; skin is reddish-yellow, hairs relatively loose and thick. The second harvest of antler is similar to the first batch. However, the main branch is long but not round, or the lower part is thick and the upper part is thin; the lower portion has longitudinal ridged veins. The skin color is grayish-yellow and the velvet is relatively coarse and thick; the sawed end has ossified around the edges. It is relatively heavy and lacks a fishy aroma. Ma lu rong: Relatively thick and large, more branches, one lateral branched is called ‘single gate’, two branched is called ‘lotus’, three branched is called ‘three branches’, four branched is called “four branches” or more. Divided by different distributions into ‘east ma lu rong’ and ‘west ma lu rong’. ‘East ma lu rong’: Single gate’s great pillar is 25~27cm long, 3mm diameter. outer skin is grayish-black, hair is grayish-brown or grayish-yellow, sawed surface has thick outer skin, grayish-black, and small holes in the middle, tender texture; lotus’ great pillar is up to 33cm long, lower portion has ridged vein, sawed surface has relatively large honeycomb-like holes; three branches has darker skin, older texture; four braches has thick and loose hairs, its great pillar has ridged vein and knots, apex has no hairs, also called ‘twist head’. West ma lu rong: Great pillar often is not round, apex is round or flat, 30~100cm long. Externally has ridges, often shrunk and flat, branch is relatively long and curved, hairs are thick and long, gray or black-gray. Sawed surface is relatively dark, often can see bone. Fishy odor, salty taste. Decoction pieces often have a reddish-yellow or reddish-brown color.

Origin
The young non-ossified velvet antler from the male deer Cervus nippon Temminck or Cervus elaphus Linnaeus.(Cervidae) the first is called ‘hua lu rong’, the second is called ‘ma lu rong’. The antler is sawed off in summer and autumn, then processed and dried in the dark or oven-dried.
