Production Regions
Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Hebei, Shaanxi.
Macroscopic Features
Calvatia gigantean (Batsch ex Pers.) Lloyd: Flat spherical or sub-spherical, no infertile base, 15~20cm diameter. Grayish-brown to yellowish-brown, paper-like, often crushed into pieces, or fallen off. Spores are grayish-brown or pale brown, dense, flexible, when torn by hand, the inside has grayish-brown cotton-like silky material. When touched the spores blow up like dust, with a smooth feeling when twisted by hand. Dust-like odor, tasteless. Lasiosphaera fenzlii Reich: small infertile base or no infertile base, remaining covering is formed by yeoowlish-brown membranous outer covering and relatively thick grayish-yellow inner covering, smooth, hard and brittle texture, falls by flakes; spores are pale blackish-brown, smooth and glossy when twist by hands. Calvatia lilacina (Mont. et Berk.) Lloyd: whipping top-like, or pressed flat round, 5~12cm diameter, developed infertile base; thin covering, bilayered, purplish-brown, rough, with round concave, rolled over, upper portion often cracked into small lumps or fallen off; purple spores.
