Macroscopic FeaturesFlat round flake-shaped, the center bulges out slightly or is slightly indented, 2~4cm diameter, about 0.5cm thick. Externally grayish-brown to black-brown, with reticular pattern, hilum is on the saw-teeth raised protuberance of the edge. Outer seed coat is hard and brittle, inner seed coat is grayish-green, velvet-like. 2 cotyledons, yellowish-white, oily. With special oily odor, bitter taste.
Quality RequirementsSuperior medicinal material has full, unbroken, heavy, with yellowish-white inner seed, not exude oil.
PropertiesBitter, slightly sweet, cool, toxic.
FunctionsDisperses bind, reduces swelling, attacks toxin, treats sores. Apply to sore and swelling toxin, acute mastitis, scrofula, anal fistula, psoriasis, and favas of the scalp.
