Production RegionsPrimarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Henan, Shandong, cultivated in most areas of China.
Macroscopic FeaturesLong cylindrical, often branched, frequently bound into bundles, 1.5~6mm diameter. Externally brownish-red to dark brown, some is grayish-green, smooth or covered in downy hairs, outer skin easily falls off. Branches has numerous nodes, internode is 6~9cm long, with remnants of leaf and leaf scars. Brittle texture, easily broken, fractured surface is yellowish-white, center is hollow. faint odor, old branches are slightly bitter, fresh branches are tasteless.
Quality RequirementsSuperior medicinal material has even branches, hairy fresh branch, jujube-red outer skin, tender texture with leaves.
FunctionsClears heat, resolves toxin, dispels wind, frees channel. Apply to epidemic febrile disease and pyrexia, hemafecia due to pyretic toxicity, abscess and sore swelling, wind-damp heat impediment, arthritis.
