Tonkin Sophora Root

Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Guangxi, Guangdong, Guizhou, Yunnan.

Irregular knotty rhizome, apex often remains stem base or stem scar, with numerous root below. Root is long cylindrical, sometimes branched, slightly curved, 10~20~35cm long, 0.3~1cm diameter; externally brown to black-brown, with longitudinal wrinkles and horizontal long slightly raised lenticels. Hard and hardly broken texture, fractured surface is slightly flat, pale brown, with circular cambium, without pith in the center. faint odor, extremely bitter taste.

Superior medicinal material has thick and strong root, brown external color, firm texture, bitter taste.

Bitter, cold, toxic

Clears heat, resolve toxin, resolves swelling, promotes throat. Apply to accumulation of fire toxins, swelling pain in the throat, swelling pain in gums.
