Macroscopic Features
Cylindrical, slightly curved, formed from many small berries clustered together, 1.5~3.5cm long, 0.3~0.5cm diameter. Externally blackish-brown or brown, with small protuberances that are evenly arranged in an angled direction, base has stem of fruit spike. Hard and brittle texture, easily to break; fractured surface is not even, granular. Berries are spherical, about 0.1cm diameter, fractured surface is granular. Distinctive odor, acrid and spicy taste.
Quality Requirements
Superior medicinal material is large fat and full, black, firm texture, slightly red fractured surface, and a potent aroma and taste.

Functions
Warms the center, disperses cold, downbears qi, relieves pain. Apply to cold pain of gastric cavity and abdomen, vomiting, diarrhea, nasosinusitis, hemicrania, externally used for toothache, coronary disease, angina pectoris; heart and abdominal cold pain, vomiting and sour regurgitation, diarrhea with intestine rumbling, cold diarrhea, yin hernia, headache, toothache.

The dried nearly mature or mature fruit spike of Piper longum L. (Piperaceae).
