Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Henan, Shandong, Fujian, Hebei, Shanxi.
Macroscopic Features
Elliptical or oval shape, with 5 longitudinal ridges, sometimes has 4~9 ridges, 2.5~4cm long, about 2cm diameter. Externally black-brown to purplish-black, smooth, slightly lustrous. Apex is narrow and pointed; base is blunt round, with obvious fruit stem scar. Hard texture, horizontal cut surface is pentagon star-like, edge has relatively thick shell, center is sub-round hole. Seed is long oval or fusiform shape, about 2cm long, 1cm diameter; externally brown or black-brown, with numerous longitudinal wrinkles, seed coat is thin, easily falls off, 2 cotyledons, yellowish-white, oily, fractured surface has cracks. faintly aromatic odor, slightly sweet taste.
Quality Requirements
Superior medicinal material is large and thick, hard, yellowish-brown.

Origin
The dried persistent calyx of Diospyros kaki Thunb.(Ebenaceae). The mature fruit is harvested in winter and the calyx is collected when fruit is consumed. It is washed clean and sun-dried.
