Production Regions
Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hubei, Henan.
Macroscopic Features
Oval or sub-spherical shape, about 1.5mm diameter. Externally grayish-brown, with slightly raised dark purple reticular lines, base is slightly pointed, with grayish-white spotted stem scars. Fruit skin is thin and brittle, easily crushed. Seed is yellowish-white, seed coat is membranous, 2 cotyledons, off-white, oily. When crushed, it has aromatic odor, slightly acrid taste.

Superior medicinal material has even full body, grayish-brown color, oily.

Acrid, warm.
Functions
Downbears qi, transforms phlegm, calms panting, moistens intestines. Apply to adverse rising of qi due to stagnation of phlegm, dyspnea and cough, constipation induced by dryness of the intestine. Resolves exterior, disperse cold, moves qi, harmonizes stomach, apply to common cold of wind-cold, dyspnea and cough, hyperemesis gravidarum, threatened miscarriage, over indulgence of fish and crab.
Processed Form
Fried zi su zi: Clean zi su zi, put into pre-heat pots, fry with slow fire, until produce explosive sound, externally darkened, fractured surface is pale yellow, and produce aromatic smells, take out and cool. Brittle texture, aromatic odor, easy to mash and extract from boiling. Moderate its acrid and dispersing nature, warms lung, downbears qi, apply to panting and cough. Honey zi su zi: externally dark brown, slightly sticky, with honey smells, and slightly sweet taste. Dilute refined honey with boiling water, wet the cleaned zi su zi and stri, slightly covered, heat with slow fire, fry until darken the color and not sticky to hands, take out and cool. Every 100kg zi su zi need 10kg refined honey. Moderate the nature of the medicinal material, not easy to damage righteous qi, advance in downbearing qi, calming panting, moistening lung, relieving cough. Apply to cough due to lung deficiency or panting due to kidney failing to promote inspiration. Su zi shuang: grayish-white cough powder, faintly odor. Cleaned zi su zi, mash into mad, heat, wrapped by cloth or oil absorbing paper, press to remove oil, repeat until not sticky to hands, and mash into fine powders. Downbears qi, calms panting, without lubricating intestines, apply to panting and spleen deficiency with loose stool.
