Production RegionsPrimarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Shaanxi.
Macroscopic FeaturesLong cylindrical and slightly twisted, 50~100cm long, 2~3.5cm diameter. Externally yellowish-brown, with longitudinal indented grooves or ridges; enlarged nodes have leaf scars and lateral branch scars. Cortex remains present and is easily torn off. Hard texture and hard to break. Decoction pieces are 0.2~0.4cm thick; edges are uneven; remaining cortex is yellowish-brown or pale yellow, sometimes has yellowish-white radial grains and spaces, full with canals; pith is relatively small, off-white or yellowish-brown, or with spaces.
Quality RequirementsSuperior medicinal material has yellowish-white cut surface.
PropertiesTasteless, bitter; cold.
FunctionsClears heat, promotes urination, frees the channels, descends milk. Apply to edema, urodynia, stranguria, joints impediment, amenorrhea and lack of milk.
OriginThe dried vine of Clematis armandii Franch, or Clematis Montana Buch. Ham. (Ranunculaceae).
