Production Regions
Primarily produced in northern China and Zhejiang.
Macroscopic Features
Root bark consists of uneven flat pieces or curled pieces, uneven length, 2~5(~10)mm thick; externally grayish yellow or yellowish-brown, rough, with obvious lenticels, longitudinally lengthened, slightly raised, sometimes the cortex has fallen off of the outer surface; pale yellowish-white; inner surface is pale yellow, relatively flat, with dense small fusiform holes or small spots. Firm and brittle texture; very fibrous fractured surface, the outer surface easily falls off. faintly oily odor that increases when broken; bitter taste. Trunk bark consists of board-shaped pieces, externally grayish-yellow or yellowish-brown; with irregular longitudinal and horizontal cracks, large lenticels, pale brownish-yellow when peeled; fractured surface is granular.

Functions
Clears heat, dries dampness, astringes to stop vaginal discharge, relieves diarrhea, stops bleeding. Apply to vaginal discharge, damp-heat diarrhea, chronic diarrhea, hemafecia, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis.
Processed Form
Chao chun pi: Fry the bran till smokes produced, then put chun pi in and fry to burnt yellow on both sides, take out and sift out bran, and cool. (Every 100 jin of chun pi with 10 jin of bran). It can moderate nature of medicine. Chun pi tan: fry chun pi shreds with fast fire till externally black and internally black-brown, spray appropriate water to out fire, take our and covered over one night. It can promote the astringing of bleeding. Mi chun pi: boil the honey and then put chun pi shreds in, fry with slow fire till yellow and not sticky to hands, take out and cool. Every 500g chun pi shreds with 90g refined honey. It can correct the bitter and astringent nature of medicine.

The dried root bark or trunk bark of Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Wingle (Simaroubaceae).
