Primarily produced in the Chinese province of Yunnan, as well as Myanmar and India.

Square or irregular lumps, uneven in size. Externally brown or black-brown, smooth and slightly lustrous. Hard texture and easily broken; uneven fractured surface with luster and thin holes, sticky when moistened. faint odor; astringent and bitter taste with slightly sweet aftertaste.

Superior medicinal material is black and slightly brown, not pasty or crushed, astringent when tasted.

Acrid, astringent; slightly cold.

Astringes moisture, engenders flesh, closes sore. Apply to disclosed sore, eczema, aphtha, traumatic injury, trauma bleeding.
