Fritillariae Bulbus (Bei Mu) 1.5 qian (5g), Trichosanthis Fructus (Gua Lou) 1 qian (3g), Poria (Fu Ling) 8 qian (2.5g), Citri Expocarpium Rubrum (Ju Hong) 8 qian (2.5g), Trichosanthis Radix (Tian Hua Fen) 8 qian (2.5g), Platycodonis Radix (Jie Geng) 8 qian (2.5g)
Method
Decoct with water in the normal fashion.
Action
Moistens the lung and clears heat, rectifies qi, and dissolves phlegm.
Indication
Bei Mu Gua Lou San is intended for patients with coughing due to dryness-phlegm. The symptoms are cough, phlegm that is difficult to expectorate, and a dry throat. The tongue coating is white and dry.
Pathogenesis
This pattern is caused by dryness-heat damaging the lung and consuming yin fluids. Dry heat burns the lung fluids, forming dry-phlegm that blocks the lung qi and leads to cough. The dryness damages body fluids and is manifested as cough with the phlegm difficult to cough out, dry and painful throat. The white and dry tongue coating indicates dryness-phlegm. The treatment is to moisten the lung and clear heat, rectify qi and dissolve phlegm.
Application
1. Essential pattern differentiation Bei Mu Gua Lou San is a representative for phlegm-dryness. This clinical pattern is marked by coughing or irritated cough, phlegm difficult to expectorate, dry throat, white and dry tongue coating. 2. Modern applications This formula is often used to treat patterns of phlegm-dryness often seen in pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia. 3. Cautions and contraindications This formula is not applicable for coughing caused by lung-kidney yin deficiency and deficiency-fire flaming up.
