Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Hunan, Zhejiang, Shandong.
Macroscopic Features
Fusiform, or slightly curve, 2~3.5cm long, 0.5~1cm diameter. Externally brown or black-brown, with irregular longitudinal wrinkles, and 6~10 obvious slightly raised ringed-joints, internode length is 2~6mm, joints have numerous brown hairs in the same direction, and remnants of root scars. Relatively smooth after removing the hairs, with thin and dense longitudinal ridges. Hard texture, the steam pieces have a horn-like fractured surface, brownish-yellow or brownish-red, sun-dried pieces have a powdery fractured surface, off-white; obvious ring-like lines from the endodermis, with a relatively deep-colored core, and scattered ‘vein spots’. Distinctively aromatic odor, slightly bitter taste.

Processed Form
Processed xiang fu: Mashed xiang fu and put into a jar, stir with yellow wine and rice vinegar evenly. Fry sugar with water, add xiang fu inside pots and mix evenly with sugar, fry to dry (every 100 jin of xiangfu need each 20 jin of yellow wine and rice vinegar, 6 jin of suger). Taste acrid, slightly bitter, sweet, neutral property. Function is the same as xiang fu. Four-processed xiangfu: cleaned xiangfu fry with rice vinegar, urine of children, yellow wine, refined honey (rendered by boiled water), until completely dry, take out (every 100jin of xiang fu need rice vinegar, yellow wine, urine of children, and refined honey each 12.5 jin). Promote the effect of adjust menstruation. Vinegar xiang fu: cleaned xiang fu granules, stir with vinegar evenly, covered overnight, fry until slightly yellow, take out and cool (every 100 jin of xiang fu need 20 jin of vinegar). Promote the effect of moving qi. Xiang fu charcoal: cleaned xiangfu fry with fast fire until outside turned burnt-black, inside burned-yellow, but still save the nature, spray with clean water, take out and sun-dry. Stop bleeding function.
