Macroscopic Features
Numerous branches, small twigs relatively flat, scale-shape. Externally reddish-brown. On the outer surface, leaves in an opposing arrangement can be seen; the fractured surface is yellowish-white. Brittle texture, easily broken. Stem and twigs are slightly cylindrical, reddish-brown; twigs are flat, 1~2mm diameter. Leaves are thin and small, scale-like, and opposing, and adhere to the twigs; dark green or yellowish-green. Clear and aromatic odor; taste is bitter and astringent and slightly acrid.
Quality Requirements
Superior medicinal material has deep green tender twigs and an absence of crushed and powdery material.

Bitter, astringent; cold.
Functions
Cools the blood, stops bleeding, eliminates wind-dampness, disperses swollen toxin. Apply to hematemesis and non-traumatic hemorrhage, empsyxis, hematuria, hemafecia, intestine wind, metrorrhagia, wind-damp impedition, bacillary dysentery, hypertension, cough, erysipelas, mumps, empyrosis.
Origin
The dried branch tips and leaves of Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (Cupressaceae).
