Production Regions
Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Hubei.
Macroscopic Features
Root head and main root is thick and short, slightly cylindrical, 1.5~4cm long, 1.5~3.5cm diameter; lower portion has numerous curved lateral roots that are 12~30cm long and 0.5~1.5cm in diameter. Externally rough, grayish-brown, with irregular longitudinal wrinkles and horizontal cracks, and numerous horizontally-oriented lenticels; root head has ring striations with numerous scars of leaf stem, inner center has indented scar of stem. Hard texture; fractured surface is grayish-yellow-white, cambium is brown, cortex has brown oil spots, xylem is yellowish-brown; fractured surface of root head has large pith and oil spots. Distinctively aromatic odor; bitter and acrid taste, slightly numbing to the tongue.
Quality Requirements
Superior medicinal material is thick and strong, oily and potent aromatic.

Acrid, bitter; slightly warm.
Functions
Dispels wind, eliminates dampness, frees cold, stops pain. apply to wind-cold and damp impediment, pain of waist and knees, subside wind of Shao Yin and headache, headache and toothache.
Origin
The dried root of Angelica pubescens Maxim. f. biserrata Shan et Yuan (Apiaceae).
