Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Henan, Hebei, Hubei.
Macroscopic Features
Dried intact leaves are oval or round oval, often wrinkled, or broken, both sides are brownish-purple, or upper surface is grayish-green, lower surface is brownish-purple, both sides are covered in loose hairs; tip is pointed, edges have saw-teeth, base is sub-round, with petiole, thin and brittle texture. Crushed pieces are often mixed with tiny stems. Stem is square columnar, with grooves, outer skin is yellowish-purple, sometimes falls off, xylem is yellowish-white, and center has white loose pith. Aromatic odor, slightly acrid taste.
Quality Requirements
Superior medicinal material has large leaf, purple color, unbroken, potent aroma, without branches.

Acrid, slightly warm.
Functions
Resolves exterior, disperses cold, moves qi, harmonizes ying. Apply to exterior syndrome due to wind-cold, fear of cold and fever, cough, headache without sweat, panting, chest and abdominal distention and fullness, vomit and diarrhea, obstruction in throat, hyperemesis gravidarum, threatened miscarriage, over indulgence of fish and crab.
